Better Work Habits

Many of us spend the majority of our working hours sitting behind a desk staring at a computer screen. We know that repeating this day in and day out can result in some damaging side effects over time. An easy way to prevent aches and pains is to take frequent breaks.

Set an alarm to take a quick break every hour or so. When lettering on the computer, my lifesaver has been the free Time Out app for Mac because it actually takes over your screen so you have no choice but to stop working. It's the perfect tool for anyone who's addicted to the snooze button. (Guilty.) SIDE NOTE: There is a "postpone" button in the app, but it's harder to ignore this alarm since it takes over your screen and you can't really see what you're working on anymore!

So what exactly should you do once you've managed to actually take a break?

  • Stay hydrated. Water not only keeps you healthy, it also keeps you alert. It will help you push through that late afternoon sluggishness once you feel it creeping in. Drinking plenty of H20 will also cause you to continue taking breaks throughout the day...you can't hold all that liquid in forever!
  • Rest your eyes. Staring at something two feet away from you strains your eyes and makes you tired. Give your peepers a break by focusing on something far away. Or go the full monty and just close your eyes for a bit.
  • Get moving. Take a stroll around your office or even around the block if you can make it outside. Getting your heart pumping increases your blood flow and will leave you feeling energized. Even if you're super busy and don't have time to go outdoors, you can still work in some quick exercises so your muscles don't get stiff.

From poor eyesight to chronic pain, the long-term effects of computer screens and sitting all day can wreak havoc on your body. If you'll be lettering for an extended period of time, remember to take frequent breaks. Your future self will thank you.
